Phone-based Math Icebreaker for Teams
A mental math race for standups, workshops, and offsites. Everyone plays on their own phone, the race animates live on screen, and there's a winner before the coffee goes cold.
What it is
One person creates a race and shares a link. Everyone who joins gets arithmetic questions on their own device and answers as fast as they can. Right answers gallop your horse forward, wrong ones knock it back. First to a score of 10 wins.
It's an icebreaker that doesn't ask anyone to share a fun fact about themselves. The whole thing is over in five minutes and produces an actual result.
What you need
- Phones. One per player, any browser. Laptops and tablets work too.
- A shared screen (optional). Meeting-room TV or a screen share puts the live standings in front of the room.
- Nothing else. No install, no accounts, no IT ticket.
Start in 3 steps
- Create & play. Pick a nickname, choose the question type and difficulty, and you're in as the first player.
- Share the link. Drop it in Slack or the call chat. In a room, read out the 6-digit code instead — people go to horseyrace.com and tap "Join with code".
- Race. Start the race, watch the 7-second countdown, then answer. Everyone moves at their own pace, so nobody waits on the slowest thinker.
Pick maths that fits the room
Choose a question type and a difficulty when you set the race up — the names are horse gaits, slowest to fastest.
Question types
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, or mixed. Mixed keeps everyone honest — you can't settle into one operation.
Difficulty
Trot, Canter, or Gallop. Canter is the sweet spot for most teams; Gallop for a room that wants blood.
Three formats that fit a meeting
- 2-minute warm-up. One race at Trot before a standup. Quick, loose, low stakes.
- 5-minute opener. One race at Canter to open a workshop, then straight into the agenda.
- Best of three. Three short races, tally the wins. Use the "Play Again" button to restart with the same players.
Group size tips
2–6 people
Free-for-all. Everyone races everyone, and the standings stay readable on one phone.
7–15 people
Still one race — 15 slots is the cap. Put the standings on the big screen so the room can follow it.
More than 15
Split into heats and race the winners in a final, or have people pair up and share a phone.
How scoring works
- +1 for a correct answer.
- −1 for a wrong one — but your score never drops below zero.
- First to a score of 10 wins. That's a net 10, so guessing wildly costs you.
The penalty is what makes it a game rather than a typing test: the fastest tapper doesn't win, the fastest thinker does.
Why it works at work
- Pressure without stakes. Real competition over something that doesn't matter — the fastest way to loosen a room up.
- Level playing field. Seniority and tenure count for nothing against 7 × 8.
- It ends. Someone hits 10 and it's over. No facilitator has to call time.
- Nobody has to talk about themselves. The people who hate icebreakers will tolerate this one.
FAQ
How long does a team icebreaker race take?
Two to five minutes. A race ends when someone reaches a score of 10, which usually takes around 20 questions.
Does everyone need an account?
No. Players open the link, type a nickname, and they are in. No signup, no download, no app store.
What if the team is bigger than 15?
A race holds 15 players. For a larger group, run two or three heats back to back and put the heat winners in a final, or have people pair up and share a phone.
Does it work for a remote team?
Yes. Paste the race link into your video call chat and everyone races from wherever they are. The live standings are the shared moment.
Is it actually free?
Yes. No accounts, no ads, no paid tier.
