What it is

One person creates a race and shares a link or a 6-digit code. Everyone who joins gets arithmetic questions on their own device. Correct answers gallop your horse forward, wrong ones drop it back, and the first to a score of 10 wins.

It needs no kit, no prep, and no explaining — which is what you want with 30 kids and a 10-minute gap in the schedule.

What you need

  • Phones. One per player, or one per pair. Any browser.
  • A projector or TV (optional). Put the race screen up so the crowd can follow the leaders.
  • Wifi or data. Nothing to install and nothing to set up in advance.

Start in 3 steps

  1. Create & play. Pick a nickname, choose the question type and difficulty, and you're in as the first player.
  2. Share the link or code. Put the 6-digit code on the projector, or send the link to the group chat. Players go to horseyrace.com and tap "Join with code".
  3. Race. Start it, count down from seven, and the whole room is playing.

Formats for big groups

Heats

Split the group into fifteens. Run the heats back to back on the big screen while everyone else watches, then race the winners in a final.

Pairs

Two players share one phone: one calls the answer, the other taps. Swap roles every race. Halves the devices you need and doubles the shouting.

Teams

Everyone races individually, but add up each team's finishing places. Keeps the slower players invested to the end.

Ladder

Start at Trot and step the difficulty up each round. The winner of the Gallop round takes the title.

Fitting it into the session

  • 5-minute rotation. One race per station, one winner per group. Rotate on the whistle.
  • 15-minute tournament. Two or three heats plus a final for the heat winners.
  • Filler. Bus is late, rain stopped play — a single race fills a gap with no setup at all.

Tips from running it with a crowd

  • Nicknames on the screen. They show in the standings, so ask for names people are happy for the room to see.
  • Set the difficulty for the youngest. Everyone in a race gets the same questions, so aim at the youngest player and let the older ones race the clock.
  • Mixed mode for mixed ages. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division shuffled together stops anyone coasting on one trick.
  • Use "Play Again". It restarts with the same players and fresh questions — no re-joining, no lost momentum.
  • Wrong answers cost a point. Say this before you start, or the fast tappers will learn it the hard way.

The basics

  • Up to 15 players per race.
  • +1 for a correct answer, −1 for a wrong one — never below zero.
  • First to a score of 10 wins.
  • Free, no signup, no ads, and nothing to install.

FAQ

How many can play at once?

Fifteen players per race. Bigger groups run in heats, or players pair up and share a phone.

What if not everyone has a phone?

Pair them up on the phones you do have. Two people to a device works well — one reads, one taps, and they swap each round.

Do the kids need accounts?

No. They open the link or enter the 6-digit code, type a nickname, and start racing. No email addresses, no passwords, no ads.

How long does one race take?

Two to five minutes. A race ends when a player reaches a score of 10, so it fits inside any rotation slot.

What if the wifi is bad?

The game is small and only needs a working connection for each device. On a weak signal, run smaller heats so fewer devices are in play at once.
